Introduction:
Throughout American history, democracy has evolved both in theory and in practice. There have been moments of great expansion to the definition of democracy and the institutions that embody the doctrine, and there have been moments of significant contraction and violation of these ideals. For your research project you must develop an informed definition of American democracy and select one moment of democratic expansion or contraction to research and write about independently. Expansions and contractions are open to interpretation and there are no “right” and “wrong” moments for this project.
Your selected topic must fall within the time period of our course (early colonial history – present day) and must be approved by your teacher.
